Frugal Fortunes & Fumbles: FFF#10

Each week I like to look back at the week that was and reflect on whether or not I am still undertaking steps to get me to my financial goals. I am not superhuman and as such I have my fumbles as well as my fortunes and I think it’s important to learn from my mistakes as well as my successes.

Fortunes

  • Maccas is currently running a monopoly game which gives you the opportunity to win some freebies. Little Mr and I often clean up rubbish on our walks around the neighbourhood and we’ve picked up a few of the game pieces from the rubbish. I’ve enjoyed a few free coffees as well as a sundae and cheeseburger – with the added side of feeling good for removing rubbish from the environment.
  • I came in under budget on the grocery shopping for the second month in a row. This month I used 93% of the budget compared to 81% the previous month. I’m hoping to be much further under budget this month as I aim to reduce my inventory.
  • We’ve been getting out of the house more recently which should reduce our electricity bill slightly.

Fumbles

  • I’ve fallen far behind in doing my surveys lately, resulting in less gift cards to pay for my groceries. This gives me a second incentive for reducing my inventory at the moment.

Fortunes

  • I got a great deal on the most expensive component of my homemade version of cereal, allowing me to maximise my savings.
  • Following Little Mr’s anemia diagnosis I received an easy pate recipe from a friend that made almost 2kgs of pate. I looked up the shops price of pate and it’s around $30/kg – since the ingredients all cost less that $8 – including electricity etc I saved around $50! Bonus is getting a delicious pate in which I know exactly what went into it.
  • It was time to buy some more bird crumble. I discovered that one of the two packets at the pet shop was actually expired. I asked if I could get a discount on it and they gave me 50% off! A saving of $15, and there is NO difference to the budgies.
  • There have been some great specials on yogurt at the shops lately which I took great advantage of considering it’s one of the few things guaranteed to be eaten by Little Mr.

Fumbles

  • Little Mr stressful hospital visit resulted in maccas for lunch.
  • We have slightly gone overboard with the groceries this month. Not yet over budget however a no spend week is in order.

Fortunes

  • I got a few DVD rentals for free with some promo codes for entertainment this week.
  • Extra repayments on the mortgage meant the end of month mortgage interest was reduced by $1.11 a day compared to last month – down $5.76 a day from January!

Fumbles

  • No fumbles that I can think of this week aside from spending more time indoors than I would have liked, increasing the electricity usage.

Fortunes

  • Once again I’ve been filling some spare time by listening to free audiobooks courtesy of my Library.
  • We started creating a picture book using brochures from out local shopping centre. This was prompted when I realised Little Mister could point out a cartoon frog picture but not recognise a real frog picture.
  • Once again came in under $50 budget for groceries. I could have gotten by without any expenditure this week however on one of my Coles perusal visits I came across 3kg of beef mince for $4.80/kg (usually $7/kg) I’ve since frozen the meat for future meals.

Fumbles

  • The bike seat I mentioned last week ended up costing a little bit as I discovered I didn’t have the necessary extension pieces to mount the seat onto my bike. Still a win overall but not quite the free seat I thought it was last week. The fortune of this ‘fumble’ is that Mr FIM (Mr FID?) convinced me to wait till he was home so we could get an extra discount he was entitled to.
  • I made some homemade icecream with a bargain milk and cream I purchased, sounds like a Fortune, only I then worked the maths and discovered it was actually cheaper to buy store bought icecream! Maybe not quite as tasty as homemade, but cheaper yes. I’m surprised at how cheap the store bought icecream is!

Fortunes

  • To keep my grocery budget below $50 each week I have to shop for bargains. I scored some great bargains on meat this week with 2kgs of beef steaks at 20% off. I also found a 2kg whole chicken at 20% off.
  • Our local rental DVD kiosk has a free rental code until November for each initial rental (per credit/debit card). My husband and I got to enjoy Eddie the Eagle by simply being aware of something so many people just walk straight past!
  • A while ago I contacted an acquaintance for advice on children’s bike seats. He had been cleaning out his garage and has GIVEN me his children’s old bike seat! I’m so happy as this will help get myself and Little Mister out and about so much more!
  • I’ve discovered a website that allows me to send a few free texts a day and it even appears as if it’s coming from my number – no catches (I’ll post about this later)!
  • With 3 weeks of the month behind us, we are still only at 62% of our grocery budget!

Fumbles

  • Unfortunately had a fail in one of the grocery shops, selected a delicious looking capsicum which cost $2, a few days after purchasing it despite it still looking in perfect condition the inside was filled with mould 😥 It was a little too long between shopping to justify returning it even tough I’m positive it was like that when I bought it.

Fortunes

  • I’m still tracking well below my $200 a month ($50/week) grocery budget. This week I again managed to snag some good prices on milk which again got frozen for use as required (the previously bought milk was used throughout the week.
  • I tracked my electricity usage on the meter this past week and was happy with a 3-4kw/day average.
  • Used a few frozen bananas (that were too mushy to eat otherwise) from the freezer to make a delicious cake.

Fumbles

  • A small amount of food wastage with a tomato going to waste. I planted that tomato in my garden with hopes it will slightly redeem itself.
  • A small treat that was still within budget, but an unnecessary expense in buying icecream. Sometimes it’s important to allow treats to prevent burning out on frugality.
  • I fell behind my ideal target for survey income. I’ve still got a chance to redeem myself if I continue steadily 🙂

How did you do this week?

Fortunes

  • This month is the first time I’ve actually set myself a set budget for groceries. My target is $200 for the month (predominately for myself and little Mister 1 as DH works away from home). I reached the $50 budget (and went over by just .14c) on Friday with no need to return to the shops for the remainder of the week just plodding on course for my monthly budget.
  • I spent $16 of that grocery budget on avocados. Seems expensive… except that was for 10kg of avocados. That’s 85 (small) avocados. And for anyone who enjoys number crunching as much as I do, that’s .19c per avocado. They are currently selling at $2-$2.50 per (larger) avocado at the moment, so assuming they all get eaten even a $1 each they have saved me $69. Avocados can be frozen with only minimal damage to the texture so I’ll be doing this with a fair amount of them once they ripen.
  • My $50 on groceries this week also included 4L of nearing expiry date milk (each in a 1L portion). I aim to keep my milk under .90c/L and these were .83-.84c/L. It’s only a saving of .25c in total but it all helps. 2L of the milk will be used as normal from the fridge, whilst the other 2L has gone to the freezer to extend it’s shelf life just long enough for it to be needed.
  • Cheap (well free 😉 ) entertainment for little Mister – during the process of decluttering I came across some old stickers (including the apple stickers that always come with iProducts) He rather enjoyed putting them onto and taking them off the glass sliding door over and over again. Fortunately the adhesive wasn’t too sticky and cleaned off easily with Norwex and water.

Fumbles

  • I cannot actually think of any fumbles this week. It was a great frugal week!
